Let everything that has breath praise the Lord
— Psalm 150:6

Since the earliest days of the Parish, our vibrant music programme has sought to enrich worship at Christ Church with soul stirring music from a wide variety of styles and eras.

Under the direction of internationally acclaimed organist Christopher Wrench, the cornerstone of our musical life is the Parish choir - The Lucian Singers - who support our congregational worship at the 9.00am Eucharist each Sunday.  The Lucians’ role is integral to our aspiration to worship with grace, joy, prayer-fullness and dignity.  Hymns, Psalm settings, anthems and organ music provide a reflective commentary on the readings of the day.

In addition to weekly Sunday services, the Lucians also sing a number of special services through the year, including Evensong (quarterly), Holy Week (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday Three Hours, Dawn service on Easter Day), All Souls’ Requiem, and Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols in December.

Music at Christ Church is supported by a choral and organ scholar programme. New choristers are always welcome!

The Lucian Singers

The parish choir, affectionately known as the Lucians is a robed, mixed voice choir of c.18 singers directed by Christopher Wrench. The Lucians attract parishioners from within and beyond the Parish boundaries.

Membership

We welcome adults of all ages. Whilst good music reading skills are vital to achieving our weekly performance obligations, we also welcome less experienced singers seeking a friendly environment in which to build a knowledge of some of the world’s most beautiful sacred music.

Christ Church warmly welcomes spiritual seekers at any stage in their journey, and this includes as members of the choir. All enquiries about membership of the choir should be directed to the Director of Music.

The choir SINGS WEEKLY at the 9.00am Sunday Eucharist (from 1 February – 25 Dec) and on major Feast Days of the Christian calendar.

Rehearsals

Sunday at 8:10am (prior to the 9am service) and 10:30am-12pm (following the service).

The choir has an annual weekend camp in September and also performs in other parishes/cathedrals from time to time.

The choir performs a wide range of traditional sacred music of the English and Continental traditions.

Bursaries and Scholarships

Choral bursaries are offered from time-to-time to encourage young choristers to expand their repertoire and experience. An Organ scholarship is offered to encourage and mentor emerging church musicians.

Former PIPE ORGAN (1969-2017)

Originally situated on the west wall of the church, the first pipe organ at Christ Church was built in 1969 by Hill, Norman & Beard (Melbourne).  In 1993/4 the organ was rebuilt, enlarged and relocated with new case work to the east end of the church by Pierce Pipe Organs.

By 2016, the pipe organ was again in need of major refurbishment.  Another refurbishment however, would not overcome the limited capacity of the pipe organ to provide adequate support for our music programme.  In February 2017, after evaluating all the options and taking account of musical requirements and lack of workable space to house a pipe organ of appropriate size; the Parish Council approved the purchase of a Digital Organ.

To the full-voic’d quire below,
In service high, and anthems clear,
As may with sweetness, through mine ear,
Dissolve me into ecstasies,
And bring all Heav’n before mine eyes.
— JOHN MILTON Il Penseroso

Notable organs in St Lucia at the University of Queensland are located at:

St John’s College (Tickell, 2011) and The James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre (Pogson, 1976).
